St. John's row houses on a rocky hillside above a harbour with fishing boats and an oil platform.

It is one of the 14 pages of the Jurisdictions block, inside official figures. The raw data is in legal-data-2026.json.

What this block holds

In Newfoundland and Labrador these rows fix the minimum terms for ending a job: notice after 3 months of service, the matching notice you owe if you leave, the one-week lay-off, group notice, vacation, the six public holidays, when your last pay is due and the time limits for a complaint. The Act contains no severance pay entitlement.

Every figure is taken from the Labour Standards Act, R.S.N.L. 1990, c. L-2. Section 55 holds both notice schedules, s. 53 the one-week lay-off that needs no notice, s. 49 the temporary lay-off limit, s. 57 the group notice for 50 or more employees, s. 8 vacation with pay, s. 14 the holidays, s. 33 the final pay deadline and s. 62 the complaint periods. The Validity column is blank for all of them; the review date is September 5, 2026.

The Act's numbers don't rise with the cost of living. They change only by amendment, and the Lieutenant-Governor in Council may proclaim public holidays beyond the six. Most holiday dates are fixed, and Memorial Day shares July 1 with Canada Day.

How to read the table

Compare the two schedules under s. 55. The employer's table and the employee's table are identical, row for row: 1 week from three months of service, up to 6 weeks from 15 years. In this province, the notice you owe when you resign mirrors the notice you'd receive. Find your band of service, then read across to Weeks.

For the loose figures, Value is the number and Figure is the note that qualifies it. The 7 days for final pay, for example, is the Act's one week written in days. Source gives the section, Validity any start date and Status the check: Verified if read in the Act, Secondary source if computed from official figures with the sums in view, Not yet verified if still unconfirmed and kept off other pages. All nine rows are Verified here. They're the rules. What you're owed depends on your own service, wages and facts.

Where the site uses these figures

The Newfoundland and Labrador guide to notice and pay in lieu quotes these rows, and the notice and termination pay calculator uses the s. 55 schedule. The mirrored employee schedule is explained in the notice a resigning employee must give, the 13-in-20-week limit in temporary lay-off rules across Canada, and the group schedule in group terminations and mass layoffs. For benefits, see EI in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Status: Verified = read in the primary source; Secondary source = worked out by us from official figures, arithmetic shown; Not yet verified = not confirmed in the primary source, and so not published as a firm figure on any other page. The detail is in rule three of the methodology.
